Corolla Surf Shop Surf School 2008
The Corolla Surf School is 12 years old. Time flies when you're having fun teaching friends how to surf! Since 1996 our goal has remained the same. We want to offer a safe, informative and fun surf class. Summer surf on the Outer Banks, especially in Corolla, creates some of the safest waves for beginning surfers. In fact, Outside Magazine has ranked Corolla as one of the top 6 destinations in the US to learn how to surf! Long flat sandbars make it easy for both the student and instructor to walk the surfboard out into the ocean and for the students to take their first ride. For 2008 we are excited to add Stand-Up Paddleboarding to our lesson choices. It's the latest craze that is taking the surf and mainland communities by storm. It's a great way to stay in shape and experience some breathtaking ocean views. All of our instructors are CPR trained by Corolla Fire & Rescue and are highly trained to give the safest, most educational, professional and fun lessons on the beach! Here is how it works:
All lessons meet at the Corolla Surf Shop location in the Food Lion Shopping Center, across the street from TimBuck2 Shopping Village. We ask that you show up 20 minutes before the scheduled lesson time in order to meet the instructors, get fitted for a wetsuit, sign the required waiver, and get detailed directions to the surf spot, (usually about a 5 minute drive.) We provide all the equipment, including a surfboard (or paddleboard) and wetsuit. Students should bring a towel, bathing suit, and sandals (the sand gets HOT!) You will then follow the instructor to the selected spot and begin your lesson!
A professional photographer will accompany some of the lessons. Those photos will be available at the Corolla Surf Shop location in the Food Lion Shopping Center for purchase.
How to sign up for a lesson:
You can sign up for a lesson online, by phone, or in-person. We recommend that you book the lesson online, as it allows you to reserve your spot(s) up to a year in advance. If you prefer to book the lesson once you arrive in Corolla, you may call 252-453-WAVE or stop in to any of our four Corolla locations. (We are located in the Food Lion Shopping Center, the Harris Teeter Shopping Center, and have two locations in the TimBuck 2 Shopping Village.) Lessons book up rather quickly in the summer months, so if you want a lesson in June, July or August, and did not reserve a spot online, please call or drop-in as soon as you get into town. This is also a great time to rent boards and equipment as they also go very quickly.

Recommendations:
Once again, we highly recommend that you reserve your lesson online. If you choose to book your lesson when you arrive in Corolla, please do so as soon as possible, as lessons fill-up quickly!
We also highly suggest lathering up with waterproof sunblock 20 minutes before the lesson. We sell high performance sunblock at all 4 locations, and the surf instructors give great advice as to what sunblock works the best. Bottled water is also a necessity. We sell bottled water at the shop, in case you forget.

NOTES:
We will reschedule or refund a lesson if there is a threat of lightning, if Corolla Fire & Rescue has determined the ocean unsafe for swimmers and/or has posted "Red Flag Conditions",or if the head surf instructor determines that the conditions are unsafe for surf lessons. Remember: Safety is our #1 concern. We are in constant communication with Corolla Ocean Rescue as well as Corolla Fire & Rescue and do not compromise the safety of our students or our instructors.
Due to constantly shifting sandbars, tides, wind direction and swell, lesson times vary from day to day and week to week. It's our job to make sure you have the safest, most informational lesson, so the lesson times are set each weekend.
Family members and friends are welcome to watch the lessons. Please bring your camera; there are always some great Kodak moments!
The Director of the Surf School and her two top instructors are heading to the warm water waves of Costa Rica for a "training trip" starting Aptil 29. Check back for pictures! After that, they're starting a rigorous training regimen with Corolla Ocean Rescue; where they run, swim and train on the shores of the Atlantic. Yes, it's a rough life ;)
